Glossary of Ecology (6th ed.) by Krebs (2009)
- the characteristic of a process that can be maintained at a certain level indefinitely, often used in an economic and environmental context. Many definitions have been suggested. The original one of the Bruntland Commission of 1987 defined sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)
- A concept that is emerging in the environmental sciences. With respect to resources it involves management that has the objective of ensuring that future generations will have the opportunity to use their fair share of resources and will inherit a quality environment. In an economic sense the concept means development that will not cause irreparable damage to the environment while ensuring that future generations will inherit their fair share of all Earth’s resources.
