- A sister group is a species or a higher monophyletic taxon that is hypothesized to be the closest generalogical relative of a given taxon exclusive of the ancestral species of both taxa. Thus, when we say that two taxa are sister groups, we mean that they are hypothesized to share an ancestral species not shared by any other taxon.
