Glossary of "Cladistics (2nd ed.)" by Kitching et al. (1998)

• Two character states within a multistate character are non-adjacent if there is at least one other character state place between them in a transformation series. For example, in the transformation series 0 <-> 1 <-> 2, states 0 and 2 are nnon-adjacent. Cf. adjacent.
