- A statistical method of determining which of two or more hypotheses (such as phylogenetic trees) best fit the observed data, given an explicit model of how the data were generated.
Glossary of Plant Systematics (1st ed.) by Simpson (2006)
- A method of phylogenetic inference that considers the probability, based on some selected model of evolution, that each tree explains the data.
