Glossary of "Cladistics (2nd ed.)" by Kitching et al. (1998)

• A procedure for weighting characters according to their fit to a cladogram, assessed as the implied number of extra steps. The fitting function is generally concave, which gives more weight to those characters with least homoplasy. See also successive (approximations character) weighting.
