Glossary of "Life (9th ed.)" by Sadava et al. (2011)

  • The principle that, for an apparent altruistic behavior to be adaptive, the fitness benefit of that act to the recipient times the degree of relatedness of the performer and the recipient must be greater than the cost to the performer.

Glossary of "Evolution (4th ed.)" by Futuyma & Kirkpatrick (2017)

  • The theoretical principle that an altruistic trait can increase if the benefit to recipients, multiplied by their relationship to the altruist, exceeds the fitness cost to the altruist.
