- a population genetic concept of the number of breeding individuals in an idealized population that would maintain the existing genetic variability; it is typically much less than the observed population size.

- The effective size of a real population is equal to the number of individuals in an ideal population (i.e, a population in which all individuals reproduce equally) that produces the rate of genetic drift seen in the real population.

- is an idealized measure of the average size of a population based on the number of individuals that contribute genes to the next generation. Because of variance in the reproduction of different individuals it will almost always be less than the census size, often considerably so.
