Glossary of "Cladistics (2nd ed.)" by Kitching et al. (1998)

• A procedure for resolving ambiguous optimization in which the initial forward character transformations are placed on to the cladogram as far from the root as possible. Delayed transformation accounts for homoplasy in terms of independent gains. Also known as slow transformation. Cf. accelerated transformation.
