Definition
Glossary of "Ecology (6th ed.)" by Krebs (2009)
- the number of species in a community or region, which may be weighted by their relative abundances; also used as an umbrella concept for total biological diversity including genetic diversity within a species, species diversity (as used here), and ecosystem diversity at the community or ecosystem level of organization.
Glossary of "Plant Biology (1st ed.)" by Graham et al. (2003)
- Term for the biological diversity, the richness of numbers and individuals of different species in an environment.
Glossary of "Biogeography (9th ed.)" by Cox et al. (2016)
- A census of the diversity of species in different parts of the planet and in the whole of the planet. It may include the genetic variation within species.
Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)
- Used loosely to mean the variety of life on the Earth, but technically this concept consists of three components: (1) genetic diversity--the total number of genetic characteristics; (2) species diversity; and (3) habitat or ecosystem diversity--the number of kinds of habitats or ecosystems in a given unit area. Species diversity in turn includes three concepts: species richness, evenness, and dominance.
