- バラ科サクラ属の落葉高木．
- 花は一重．花弁は淡紅白色．花弁は散りやすい．3月頃，展葉に先立って開花する．
- 日本全国に広く植栽されている品種で，花見のサクラの代表．
- クローンであるため，桜前線の観測に利用されている．
- エドヒガンとオオシマザクラを起源とする栽培品種と考えられてきたが，最近の研究でヤマザクラなど複数のサクラが関与していることが示唆されている．
- 東広島キャンパスでは，およそ770本が全域に植栽されている．

- A cultivar in the Edohigan group, planted all over Japan.

Notes
- A deciduous tree of the genus Cerasus in the rose family (Rosaceae).
- The flowers are single-petaled, pale pinkish white. Petals are easy to scatter. Blooming occurs in March, prior to the leafing.
- Yoshino cherry tree is a variety widely planted throughout Japan and is a representative of cherry trees for cherry blossom viewing (“O-hanami”) in spring season.
- Because it is planted only by cloning, Yoshino cherry tree is used for observing the cherry blossom front.
- It has been thought to be a cultivar originating from Cerasus itosakura (Siebold) Masam. & S.Suzuki ('Edo-higan') and C. speciosa (Koidz.) H.Ohba ('Oshima-zakura'), but recent research suggests that other cherry species, such as C. jamasakura (Siebold ex Koidz.) H.Ohba ('Yama-zakura'), are also involved.
- Approximately 770 Yoshino cherry trees have been planted throughout the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus.
