  • The top layer of a land surface where the rocks have been weathered to small particles. Soils are made up of inorganic particles of many sizes, from small clay particles to large sand grains. Many soils also include dead organic material.
  • soil (in engineering): Earth material that can be removed without blasting.
  • soil (in soil science): Earth material modified by biological, chemical, and physical processes such that the material will support rooted plants.
