- (a) A horizontal, underground stem, generally with short internodes and scalelike leaves, e.g. Zingiber officinale. (b) A horizontal stem of a fern that grows at ground level. (stem/shoot type)
- An underground stem (as opposed to a root) that runs horizontally beneath the ground.
