Glossary of "Plant Biology (1st ed.)" by Graham et al. (2003)
- Organisms that are composed of many cells, have cellulose-rich cell walls, have chlorophyll in chloroplasts, and are photosynthetic (or, if non-photosynthetic, originated from photosynthetic ancestors), and are adapted in many ways to life on land (or, if aquatic, are descended from land-adapted plants).
Glossary of Plant Systematics (1st ed.) by Simpson (2006)
- A group of organisms, defined either by characteristics (possessing photosynthesis, cell walls, spores, and a more or less sedentary behavior), or by phylogenetic relationships, equivalent in this text to the land plants, Embryophyta.
"A Dictionary of Ecology, Evolution and Systematics (2nd ed.)" by Lincoln et al. (1998)
- 1: Any member of the kingdom Plantae. 2: A multicellular eukaryote organism typically exhibiting holophytic nutrition, lacking locomotion, lacking obvious nervous or sensory organs, and possessing cellulose cell walls.
