Definition
Glossary of Ecology (6th ed.) by Krebs (2009)
- the ecological space occupied by a species, and the occupation of the species in a community.
Glossary of "Life (9th ed.)" by Sadava et al. (2011)
- The set of physical and biological conditions a species requires to survive, grow, and reproduce. (See also fundamental niche, realized niche.)
Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)
- (1) The “profession,” or role, of an organism or species; or (2) all the environmental conditions under which the individual or species can persist. The fundamental niche is all the conditions under which a species can persist in the absence of competition; the realized niche is the set of conditions as they occur in the real world with competitors.
