Glossary of "Ancestors in Our Genome" by Harris (2015)

• is the DNA contained in organelles called mitochondria inside animal cells. In humans, it is a circular genome of 16,500 nucleotide bases organized into thirty-seven gene. It is inherited through the maternal lineage only.
