Abstract

Haryati, E. & Nakagoshi, N. 2013. Post-fire succession at forest vegetation in Giam Siak Kecil Wildlife Reserve, Riau, Indonesia. Hikobia 16: 335-xxx.

The predominantly uncontrolled misuse of fire for farmland clearing is a major cause of forest fire. The aim of this study is to recognize plant community diversity and soil properties quality after forest fire. This study was conducted in Giam Siak Kecil Wildlife Reserve, Riau Province, Indonesia, which is annually threatened by forest fire. Total of twenty sample plots (20 m x 20 m) were placed in four locations: post fire in 2012, 2010, 2008, and secondary forest. This research found that Imperata cylindrica was the dominant species with the highest of IVI in post fire plots. The highest result of Shannon-Weiner Index was in secondary forest (2.34). It means the secondary forest has a more stable vegetation community compared to the other post fire plots. Logistic model showed that the vegetation diversity would take approximately 45.5 years to recover. The soil qualities of soil post forest fire were poor. Soil pH and bulk density increased after fire, while K+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, total N, CEC, organic-C, porosity and permeability decreased after fire. Using the logistic model, the recovery process of soil properties would take from 4.3–19.8 years. The study showed that post-fire succession process in peat swamp forest was very slow.
