frame-shift mutation (frameshift mutation)
Glossary of "Life (9th ed.)" by Sadava et al. (2011)
- The addition or deletion of a single or two adjacent nucleotides in a gene's sequence. Results in the misreading of mRNA during translation and the production of a nonfunctional protein. (Contrast with missense mutation, nonsense mutation, silent mutation.)
Glossary of "Evolution (4th ed.)" by Futuyma & Kirkpatrick (2017)
- An insertion or deletion of base pairs in a translated DNA sequence that alters the reading frame, resulting in multiple downstream changes in the potential gene product.
