Glossary of "Cladistics (2nd ed.)" by Kitching et al. (1998)
- A school of systematics that holds the position that overall similarity had to be taken into account and balanced against genealogy in the construction of a classification. Because evolutionary rates among different lineages were known to be highly variable, those taxa that had 'evolved further' (as evidenced by a large number of autapomorphies) warranted special recognition. One consequence of this position is an insistence on the retention of paraphyletic groups in classifications.
