desertification
Definition
Glossary of "Plant Biology (1st ed.)" by Graham et al. (2003)
- The conversion of grasslands and semiarid lands into desert-like regions through human overexploitation, usually by overgrazing, the extension of farming into marginal lands, and removal of plant cover for fuel.
Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)
- The process of creating a desert where there was not one before. Farming in marginal grasslands, which destroys the soil and prevents the future recovery of natural vegetation, is an example of desertification.
