Definition
Glossary of Ecology (6th ed.) by Krebs (2009)
- the change in human populations from the two zero-population-growth states of high birth and high death rates to low birth and low death rates.
Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)
- The pattern of change in birth and death rates as a country is transformed from undeveloped to developed. There are three stages: (1) in an undeveloped country birth and death rate are high, and the growth rate low; (2) the death rate decreases, but the birthrate remains high and the growth rate is high; (3) the birthrate drops toward the death rate and the growth rate therefore also decreases.
