• Nucleotide that is generated from ATP by adenylyl cyclase in response to various extracelar signals. It acts as small intracellular signaling molecule, mainly by activating cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA). It is hydrolyzed to AMP by a phosphodiesterase.
