Definition
Glossary of "Plant Biology (1st ed.)" by Graham et al. (2003)
- An atmospheric gas that is used by plants in photosynthesis to generate organic food; also a so-called "greenhouse gas" whose atmospheric increase has been related to global warming.
Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)
- Molecule of carbon and oxygen present in the atmosphere at approximately 350 ppm. Emissions of carbon dioxide resulting from burning of fossil fuels are thought to be contributing to potential global warming through an enhanced greenhouse effect.
