Acrosomal vesicle

acrosomal vesicle

Definition

Glossary of The Cell (5th ed.) by Alberts et al. (2008)

Region at the head end of sperm cell that contains a sac of hydrolytic enzymes used to digest the protective coating of the egg. When a sperm starts to enter an egg, the contents of the vesicle are released (the acrosome reaction), helping the sperm penetrate the zona pellucida.
