*Flowering occurs around March, prior to the leaf outgrowth. Distinguishable from the same genus ''Magnolia salicifolia'' by the presence of a single small young leaf, usually at the base of the flower.
*The fruits are reddish-red when mature. Many species of the genus ''Magnolia'' have conglomerate fruits, which consist of several flat to spherical pouch fruits joined together.
*There are many theories about the origin of the Japanese name, but the Japanese name "kobushi" has been used as the scientific name and the English name.
*At the Higashi-hiroshima Campus, "kobushi" are planted in front of the Central Library and around the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences.
