Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)

• Used loosely to mean the variety of species in an area or on the Earth. Technically, it is composed of three components: species richness--the total number of species; species evenness--the relative abundance of species; and species dominance--the most abundant species.
