Glossary of "Ancestors in Our Genome" by Harris (2015)
- When different versions of a gene exist in the common ancestor of three species, it is possible that each of the three copies sorts randomly through evolutionary time into the lineages of the three species. This results in a fraction of gene trees that will not match the species tree.
