Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)

  • Refers to a number of metals, including lead, mercury, arsenic, and silver (among others) that have a relatively high atomic number (the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom). They are often toxic at relatively low concentrations, causing a variety of environmental problems.
