Definition
Glossary of "Plant Biology (1st ed.)" by Graham et al. (2003)
- The formation of a pocket in the cell membrane that pinches around an external particle or dissolved material and forms a vesicle around it. The vesicle then detaches from the membrane and floats free in the cytoplasm. Endocytosis brings material into a cell.
Glossary of "Life (9th ed.)" by Sadava et al. (2011)
- A process by which liquids or solid particles are taken up by a cell through invagination of the plasma membrane. (Contrast with exocytosis.)
