- A meristematic tissue that generates cork cells toward the periphery of a woody plant's stem or roots, and may also produce some parenchyma cells toward the inside; also known as phellogen.
Glossary of Plant Systematics (1st ed.) by Simpson (2006)
- A sheath or hollow cylinder of cells that develops near the periphery of the stem or root, undergoing tangential divisions to form phelloderm to the inside and cork to the outside.
