Definition

Glossary of "Plant Biology (1st ed.)" by Graham et al. (2003)

  • The concept that water movement in xylem tissues can be ascribed to two related phenomena, the cohesion of polar water molecules that allows water to exist as thin streams that are resistant to breakage, and the tension placed on a stream of water within a plant when water molecules at the plant's surface are removed by transpiration.
