- Informal term used to describe a wide range of simple unicellular and multicellular eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms. Examples include Nitella, Volvox, and Fucus.

- Cyanobacteria, plus protists that usually (though not always) possess chloroplasts, photosynthetic storage materials, and cell walls. Algae primarily live in aquatic habitats and are typically simpler in structure and reproduction than land plants.
