Summary

  1. A list of the vascular plants known from Miyajima Island was compiled with general considerations on the flora presented and annotations for several species. References to previous literature reporting on the various species are given. Most of the specimens made use of in this study are kept in the herbarium of the Miyajima Botanical Garden, Hiroshima University (HIRO-MY).
  2. Miyajima Island, situated at 34°16' N. latitude and 132°19' E. longitude, lies along the west coast of Hiroshima Bay, ca. 20 km southwest of Hiroshima City. It has an area of 30.2 km2 and is mostly mountainous, rising to an elevation of ca. 530 m at its highest point. As for geological features, the island is composed completely of granite. The mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation are 15.1°C and 1648.8 mm respectively. Miyajima belongs to a part of the Seto Inland sea National Park, and because of its unique combination of natural beauties and the Itsukushima Shrine, is very famous.
