- (1) A character that can show two or more character states within the same individual, e.g. alleles. (2) A character that can show two or more states among different individuals of a taxon, e.g. colour forms of some species of butterfly.
Glossary of Plant Systematics (1st ed.) by Simpson (2006)
- A character that has valiable character state values within an OTU.
