- natural selection that favors extreme trait values rather than intermediate values so that over time extreme traits become more common.
Glossary of "Plant Biology (1st ed.)" by Graham et al. (2003)
- A process of selection that favors individuals with the extremes of the range of a trait over those with the average for that trait.
Glossary of "Evolution (4th ed.)" by Futuyma & Kirkpatrick (2017)
- Selection in favor of two or more phenotypes and against those intermediate between them; also called diversifying selection.
Glossary of "Life (9th ed.)" by Sadava et al. (2011)
- Selection in which phenotypes at both extremes of the population distribution are favored. (Contrast with directional selection; stabilizing selection.)
