Abstract

Ojiya City of Niigata Prefecture, located in the Japan Sea coast of central Japan, is an area of heavy snowfall. There are many hill slopes with frequent avalanches in the Matto Hills located in the southern part of this city. Various plant communities composed of forest and herbaceous vegetation in these hill slopes were classified into eight vegetation units using a plant sociological approach. In addition, several micro-scale landforms and trace types of avalanches were divided, and a depth of topsoil in the habitat of each plant community was also measured in the same study site. Several spatial interrelations between the vegetation units and those habitat factors were evaluated. Several ecological processes that restrict existence, distribution and development of each vegetation unit were determined.
